Hunter and its fire tower as seen from Westkill

The fire tower on Hunter Mountain with its sweeping views is the highest in the Catskills at over 4000′.  This hike is part of a summer series that will traverse the entire Devil’s Path. With Indian Head and Twin already covered, look next for Sugarloaf and Plateau and then Westkill and St. Anne’s Peak.


Event Duration:  7.5  miles, 6-7 hours

Level of Difficulty:  Difficult

Bring: Bring lunch, snacks and plenty of water!!!   Dress for comfort with moisture wicking clothing. Wear good hiking shoes.  Hiking poles are recommended, as are map and compass.

Group size is limited to 12, so register early.

Dogs allowed: No

Driving Directions:  

From South: NYS Thruway (I-87), Exit 19 at Kingston. Follow Route 28 West to Phoenicia. At Phoenicia, follow signs for Route 214 and drive approximately 9 miles. Parking is just past the campground next to the pond on the left.

From North: NYS Thruway (I-87), Exit 21 at Catskill. Left on Route 23 East to Route 9W South. Follow Route 9W through Catskill to Route 23A west through Tannersville. Make left on Route 214, 2 miles past Tannersville. Campground located on Route 214, approximately 3 miles on right.
