Saturday, September 28, 10 AM & 2 PM - CMC at the Skitember Fest on Belleayre Mtn.

The CMC will host three events at the Skitember Fest on Belleayre Mtn. Visit http://www.belleayre.com/ for more info.10 AM - Hiking with Map and Compass:  How to Get Where You Want to GoJoin Wendell George and Rick Roberts of the Catskill Mountain Club as we hike the ridge of Belleayre Mountain and enjoy its outstanding views of the Catskills. We will take advantage of those views to teach hikers how to use a map and compass for navigation. This essential safety skill is not well understood by many hikers, sometimes leading to difficult and even dangerous experiences. Bring a trail map and compass if you have one. The hike involves some moderate to strenuous climbing, so wear good hiking boots and bring water. Rain cancels this event. Meet at the Longhouse Lodge.2 PM - Introduction to HikingLove the idea of hiking but not sure how to get started? Have a feeling it might be a little more involved than simply 'taking a walk'? Join veteran hiker and Catskill Mountain Club member Heather Rolland in a simple and fun pre-hiking introduction to heading out on the trail. Learn about how to use the, ahem, restroom in the woods, what to carry in your pack, and how to handle common contingencies on the trail. Heather is known for her wit and wisdom, and her recent feat: she successfully climbed all 35 high peaks in the Catskills wearing a ballgown. Come ask her why! Meet at the Longhouse Lodge.2 PM - Fundamentals of KayakingHave you always thought kayaking looks like a blast, but wondered if it's hard or dangerous? Come hear and talk to Catskill Mountain Club members and expert kayakers Ann Roberti and Rick Roberts to get your feet wet (and maybe more). Ann and Rick will talk about basic skills and about equipment, giving you the tools to get started in this fabulous sport. Demonstration equipment will be provided by the CMC and Kenco outfitters of Kingston. Meet at Belleayre Beach on SR 28 in Pine Hill.
