Saturday, August 9, 3 PM – Hike the new Palmer Hill Trail
Join CMC Board Member Ann Roberti, as she leads an Andes Community Day walk on the brand new Palmer Hill Trail in Andes, NY. It’s a really special hike – glorious views, extensive stone walls and old foundations, and vast open sky — truly an unusual Catskill trail. The trail meanders through open meadows with beautiful views of forested lands, productive apple trees and historic stone walls and foundations. It passes over Bryant’s Brook and also features excellent views of many of the Catskill High Peaks, including Graham, Doubletop, Balsam Lake, Eagle, Balsam and the Dry Brook Ridge. The Palmer Hill Trail consists of three segments ‐ a 0.6 mile route to the farmstead intersection and then a relatively easy 1.5 mile Lower Meadow Loop and a more strenuous 1 mile Upper Meadow Loop. This allows hikers the options of short and easy hikes or moderately strenuous and longer hikes. Each takes you through forest and beautiful wildflower meadows that offer wide open views of the surrounding mountains and hills and of the bucolic scenery that Delaware County epitomizes. This hike may do both loops or just one. After watching the parade, the corn on the cob eating contest, watermelon eating contest and the dance performance in Ballantine Park, after enjoying BBQ chicken or Bratwurst, come work off the calories while enjoying some of the loveliest views in the Catskills. All participants are required to wear sturdy sneakers or hiking shoes (no flip flops or sandals) and bring a bottle of water!Registration not required. Well behaved, leashed dogs welcome.Directions: The trailhead is located just off Route 28 between Margaretville and Andes (2 miles from downtown Andes and 9 miles from Margaretville), with parking available at the existing scenic overlook site on Finkle Road. The Palmer Hill Trail is the third trail created by the Catskill Mountain Club, and our second in partnership with the NYC DEP.

Friday, August 1, 9:30 AM - Hike in Minnewaska State Park Preserve
Who says we have to hike in the Catskills every time we go out? Not us! After all, within shouting distance of our beautiful Catskills lies the Shawangunk Ridge, designated by the Nature Conservancy as one of the "Last Great Places" on Earth. No doubt, some folks think that they're one and the same. But, in fact, the Gunks are part of the Appalachian Mountain Range, while the Catskills are the easternmost part of the Allegheny Plateau.Besides their different geological histories, the Catskills and the Shawangunks have differing appearances and features. Unlike the heavily forested Catskills, the Gunks are characterized by large areas of exposed rock, sky lakes and by rare plant communities different from those in the Catskills. There are wide open views of the Hudson Valley to be had, paths through one of only two ridgetop dwarf pine barrens in the world and expansive stands of blueberries, once harvested commercially by a seasonal community of berry pickers. It's common to see raptors soaring on the currents off the eastern slopes.Join CMC board member Wendell George as we hike in Minnewaska State Park Preserve. We'll hike to Awosting Falls, Lake Minnewaska and on to Gertrude's Nose. From there, we'll continue to Millbrook Mountain.Dress for comfort in moisture wicking clothing and wear good hiking boots. A hat is recommended, as is sunscreen. Bring lunch and plenty of water for this exposed warm weather hike. No dogs on this hike, due to restrictive park rules. The hike is moderately difficult due to its length of about 10 miles. Elevation change is relatively modest.Pre-register before Thursday, July 31, 6 PM by contacting Wendell at: wendell@catskillmountainclub.org or call 845-254-4546. POSTPONED, TBD - Hike Balsam Lake and Graham Mountains
Join us for a hike in one of my favorite sections of the Catskills with quiet woods, scrambles, ups and downs in a lovely area of the western Catskills. Balsam Lake is a lovely evergreen mountaintop with an expansive firetower view! The way to Graham is a woodsy trek to the top with it relic of bygone days, and early communications tower. This is a 10 mile challenge but great fun. See the NYNJTC Catskill Trail MAP # 142.Dress in comfortable, moisture wicking clothing and wear good hiking boots. Be prepared for nettles and berry bushes. Bring lots of water and bring lunch. For experienced hikers only and a hike worth doing. Poor weather will cancel this hike. Dogs allowed upon approval. Strenuous.NOTE: This hike, originally scheduled for September 14, has been rescheduled because of concerns about hunting activity in the area of the hike. It is the policy of the CMC to avoid hiking in areas where big game hunting activity is likely. The NYS DEC recently adopted a new, early hunting season for bear in the Catskills. This new season takes place during prime hiking season and during a time when fully leafed out trees greatly restrict the ability of hunters and of hikers to have clear visual contact. We urge all hikers to avoid areas where hunting is likely, to always wear blaze orange caps and/or vests and to hike in groups during big game hunting seasons in order to increase visibility and draw attention to your presence in the woods. Be observant, be careful and be safe.
